"Teenage Kicks" + "The Lyke Wake Dirge"

Going to work each day, week in and week out, will strike you dumb, numb, stupefied, struggling for words. You can deny it. You can debate it. But by the time Friday rolls around, I for one am approaching zombie status. So why continue? Money, survival, I suppose.

Occasionally there is the faintest glimpse of a silver lining. For me, it is usually on the homeward-bound commute and the silver lining is aural. Tonight, racing up the steep grade of Denny Way toward Capitol Hill, my iPod delivered up a magical tandem of songs. First, The Undertones' "Teenage Kicks":

Several weeks ago I meant to mention on this page something about young people in the fading spring sunlight of evening. What separates the human species from other animals is memory. Humans have amazing discursive memories, enhanced further by writing and now computing. But in the end writing still boils down to energy -- which young people, animals and the sun all have in abundance.
